He believes that large digital communities are most rewarding to their members if they adopt principles that empower the same behavior expected offline. He studied Human-Computer Interaction at Stanford University while captaining their men’s soccer team to two National Championship Finals. He spends what little spare time he has hunting music and "ideafreaking" (a term he believes he coined).
Shelly Roche, CTO of Foodtree Inc.
Shelly Roche, CTO: (twitter) Shelly is an experienced technology leader with a strong entrepreneurial streak. While proficient in a variety of technologies and platforms, she is particularly fond of Open Source and Open Data. Fresh out of college, she conceived and developed first-to-market web-based software for electronic delivery of medical prescriptions. As the Director of Information Technologies for Comcast Corporation, Shelly drove application development efforts in a multi‐platform technical environment supporting 60,000+ users throughout the U.S. The daughter of a fourth generation farmer, Shelly is innately drawn to things that grow. Her nerdy side is fascinated by the role technology can play in connecting people with the things they love. Somewhere along the way, she realized pretty much everything connects back to food, and that some of the biggest problems within our mainstream food system can be solved by providing consumers with better tools to help them find (and support) farmers and companies that use responsible, healthy practices.
Anthony Nicalo, CEO of Foodtree Inc. Anthony Nicalo, CEO: (twitter) Anthony Nicalo has spent his career as a chef and entrepreneur dedicated to the notion that story should be a key ingredient in everything we consume: the story of what, the story of where, the story of when, the story of how, and the story of why. Every business he turns his hand to celebrates provenance – from provenir (Fr.) “the origin or source of something” – as the heart of what makes things good. His grandfather’s garden – a lush acre that echoed the story of his family’s long history with the land -- was the first place he learned to love the taste and texture of produce pulled fresh from the earth. He carried this love through days spent scouting local flavor as a chef in locations from Hawaii to Italy, and into his role as director at Inevitable Table, where clients could access a range of services designed to provide them with clean, healthy food choices. Anthony then turned his focus to sourcing and promoting quality food and wine for fellow lovers of story. The journey began with Farmstead Wines, the result of Anthony’s efforts to share the dedication and passion of winemaking vinaroons, and continued in his work with Farmfed, a non-profit organization dedicated to authentic food and farming. Anthony also parlays a love of functional, eco-friendly design into his line of chemical-free chef’s apparel at Dajoji. Now Anthony is pouring that same passion for ethical sourcing into Foodtree, a new model for transparency in food production, distribution and marketing. His goal is to build a comprehensive food web, while helping ethical growers and suppliers use social technology to share their product’s story with consumers who care about where their food comes from, and how it ends up on their table. This year, Anthony's love of story is going to have a very personal impact on his day-to-day existence. In 2010, Anthony and his family are only going to eat and drink items where they clearly know the what, where, when, how and why of how they came to be: Eating Provenance. If you want to join Anthony in putting your passion for story into action on your plate -- and to tap into his favorite food and wine resources, and fresh cooking ideas and recipes -- head here to get started!
